MOBOs Spotlight: Krept & Konan
The South London UK Hip Hop Duo are Storming Ahead with Four Nominations!
The MOBO Awards 2015 are just around the corner and it’s all set to be an incredible evening at the first direct arena celebrating world-class musical talent. Throughout the build-up, we’re shining the spotlight on some of this year’s top acts…
This year’s MOBO Awards are particularly exciting for homegrown artists. For the first time ever, the nominations list is dominated by Grime and UK Hip Hop acts, picking up a massive 27 nominations across all categories.
South Londoners Krept & Konan have stormed ahead with four nominations – Best Album, Hip Hop Act, Male Act and Best Song. Having snagged Best Newcomer at last year’s event, Krept & Konan are no longer strangers to the limelight. And with the duo’s first full length album ‘The Long Way Home’ becoming the highest ever charting UK Hip Hop record (debuting at #2 in the national chart), it’s no surprise these talented wordsmiths are frontrunners this year.
Making music for over a decade, Krept & Konan’s rise to stardom was, like many in the Grime and UK Hip Hop scenes, slow and steady. Formed in 2009, the duo ditched the conventional quest for major-label attention, instead focussing on building their fan base on social media and establishing Play Dirty – the pair's very own music label and clothing line.
In 2010, Krept & Konan’s Tsunami mixtape caught the attention of those with a liking for the genre. The duo fast became a YouTube sensation, stacking up millions of views with their cover of Jay-Z and Kanye West’s Otis. The pair enjoyed touring with Grime ‘man of the moment’ Skepta, and in 2013 they dropped another mixtape – Young Kingz.
A huge turning point for Krept & Konan, Young Kingz featured appearances from the likes of Giggs, Chip and Tinie Tempah. It landed them a spot in the UK Top 20 and would ultimately lead them to a deal with Virgin EMI and Def Jam in the US. It’s been an exciting year all round for Krept & Konan – a MOBO or two would surely be the icing on the cake.
