100 Day countdown to The Grand Depart sees the start of the Yorkshire Festival 2014

Excitement is building across Yorkshire this week with the countdown to The Grand Depart reaching a new milestone.

Last week saw the countdown reach 100 days to go until the Tour de France sets off from outside the City Hall in Leeds. As well as multiple events to celebrate the milestone in style, five-time Tour winner Bernard Hinault arrived in Yorkshire and cycled up Cragg Vale, England's longest continuous uphill climb, making many cyclists dreams come true.

However, it wasn't just a celebration that the Tour de France is just around the corner. It also saw the beginning of the Yorkshire Festival 2014.

Introducing the Yorkshire Festival 2014: 100 Days of Arts and Culture

From the 27th March to the 6th July 2014, there will be hundreds of events spanning the entire county of Yorkshire. From world-class music, dance, and theatre, to film, art, sculpture, there's something for everybody. Not only that, the Yorkshire Festival 2014 sees the inclusion of the Grand Départ of the Tour de France for the very first time. From Hebden Bridge, to Skipton, York, Sheffield and Harrogate; the festival reaches every corner of the county.

So what's actually happening during the Yorkshire Festival 2014? We've put together a few of the things that we're looking forward to in Leeds over the next 100 days.

Cheer-Sing

Cheering and crowd participation is an incredible part of an exciting event such as the Tour de France. However, does the sound of cheering change depending on your location? This fun-filled project tests out the theory of area-specific cheering.

Held at the Holy Trinity Church on Boar Lane, Leeds, Cheer-Sing has the intention of increasing cheering not just by making as much noise as possible, but by establishing a series of locally distinctive soundscapes. By creating sound through cheers, clapping and chants that reflect the characteristics of the local area, Cheer-Sing hopes to hopes to create something truly special for competitors passing by, and those attending.

Bicyclism

Something that we're really looking forward to seeing is Bicyclism, an exhibition about people in Leeds who adore cycling, its history, and its importance in popular culture. Created by Casey Orr, Boff Whalley and Jenny Harris, Bicyclism features a series of remarkable photos. Showcasing ordinary cyclists, stunt bikers in skateparks and much more, as well as an accompanying soundtrack created with bicycles, Bicyclism is not to be missed.

Catch Bicyclism at the Millenium Square, Leeds from June 24th – July 7th.

Tour de Cinema

Working with the National Trust, Cine Yorkshire and many other partners, the Tour de Cinema brings thirty super-high-definition screens to unusual locations across the county from Brimham Rocks, to Fountains Abbey. Arriving in Leeds at the Millenium Square, the Tour de Cinema features multiple films about cycling including “The Big Melt', which is accompanied by a roaring soundtrack compiled by Jarvis Cocker.
