The Bupa Great Manchester Run 2014 Weekend Is Almost Here
On the 18th May, the Bupa Great Manchester Run returns to the city for the 11th consecutive year.
Established as part of the legacy following the 2002 Commonwealth Games held in Manchester, the run first started in 2003. Since then, it's grown at an incredible rate and now attracts over 30,000 participants. Not only that, it also includes a full weekend of sport including the Bupa Mini and Junior Great Manchester Run as well as the Great CityGames.
The run itself is staged over a course stretching 10km. Starting on Portland Street near Oxford Street, running down Chester Way, on to Bridgewater Way, then past the iconic home to Manchester United, Old Trafford and finishing on Deansgate. The course features several “Bands on the Run' positions to provide runners with some musical motivation whilst running. Another unique feature will be a special “run-through' shower just before the end of Trafford Wharf Road allowing participants to quickly cool off and freshen up.
The Great CityGames is held the day before the Bupa Great Manchester Run. It brings world class athletics to the streets of Manchester with Deansgate and Albert Square being converted into purpose built athletics arenas. The 2009 event saw Usain Bolt setting a world record for the 150 metres straight run!
